Evangelical Missionary Society in Mayurbhanj

(no website found)

EMSM started in 1895 when the first missionary lady arrived in Mayurbhanj, a nothern district of Orissa. Within a year the local Maharaja opened a beggars' home and gave it to the missionary to run. This was the beginning of the Leprosy Home. The home was affiliated with The Leprosy Mission from whom it receives some support. It moved to the present location on the outskirts of Baripada in 1907.

Now patients are admitted with drug reactions, bad ulcers, the bad lepromatous cases, those who cannot get treatment in the interior villages, and also some for social reasons. There is a part time doctor and two trained paramedical workers. Apart from medical tratment, rehabilitation is also undertaken. There is also a small laboratory for skin and blood testing.

Patients are fully involved by making micro-cellular rubber shoes, and weaving of clothing needed within the home. Also mats and baskets are made, and patients run the farm which consists of the usual animals, some fruit trees, and crops of rice and sobai grass. This all helps with self-sufficiency and to provide a small income.

EMSM is hopeful of support to build North Orissa's first hospital capable of reconstructive surgery and amputation. This 40 bed hospital would also cater to the needs of Leprosy patients and to deal with the heavy incidence of TB.
