Hope for Life - An adventure-based support program for young people experiencing disadvantage

Breakaway Youth is an early intervention program which seeks to bring hope and opportunity to disadvantaged young people living in Melbourne. We believe that generational cycles of substance abuse, incarceration, family violence and welfare dependency can be broken by consistent and caring relationships, a healthy self-image, and empowering young people with the appropriate social and life skills. Our program offers long-term support in the form of adventure-based camps, activities and home visitation throughout critical adolescent years.  Our program leaders are volunteers who put love into action by building trusted relationships with the young people in our program and creating a safe and engaging space for them to find identity, purpose and belonging.

Breakaway Youth (originally Breakaway Camps) was founded in 1989 by Merv Landy. Merv worked as a prison officer for 7 years, and during this time he had many conversations with inmates, asking them what might have prevented them from prison. The most common answers Merv received were: "had someone really loved me," and, "had someone taken me out of the environment I was in, like going camping". Merv then spent another 7 years working for a drug and alcohol rehabilitation program.  It was here he realised, in his own words, "I was still working at the wrong end of the stick".  At this point, after some in-depth research, Merv was convinced that prevention and early intervention was the key.

We deliver a 6-year intervention and support program for participants enrolled in one of our small groups. Onboarding begins at age 10-11 and graduate at age 15-16.  Each group attends monthly weekend camps and activities throughout the year, with staff and volunteers maintaining contact through home visitation, regular correspondence, and responding to requests for assistance from the young people and their families.
