Come!

Come first to Bethlehem where Christ was born:

See Him, the heavenly King, that Christmas morn
Low in the manger laid: No pomp or show -
T'was His eternal love that bade Him go

Come to Gethsemane: Watch Jesus there:
Witness His agony, kneeling in prayer.
Great drops of blood He sweat, beneath the load:
Of salvations plan, dark Calvary road.

Come now to calvary: Look there and see
Christ Jesus crucified, for you and me:
Cruel his sufferings, pierced hands, side and head;
Sins tremendous load - in our stead.

Come to the empty tomb: Jesus is risen
From the grave and ascended into heaven.
One day He will return to claim His throne
And reign for ever, the King and His own.

Men ablaze are invincible:
Hell trembles when men kindle:
The strongholds of Satan are invincible
against everything but fire.

- Samuel Chadwick

3/1996

Captains and conquerors leave a little dust
And kings a dubious legend of their reigns
The swords of Cesar now are left to rust
God's word the Bible, evermore remains.

O sacred Head, once wounded,
With grief and shame weighed down,
Once scornfully surrounded
With thorns, Thine only crown;
How pale You were with anguish,
With sore abuse and scorn!
How did that visage languish
Which once was bight as morn.

What thou, my Lord, hast suffered
Was all for sinners gain:
Forgiveness free is offered
Yet, Thine the deadly pain;
Lo, here I fall, my Saviour!
'This I deserve Thy place;
Please, in Thy love and favour
Vouchsafe to me Thy grace.

What language shall I borrow
To thank Thee, dearest friend,
For this, Thy dying sorrow,
Thy pity without end?
O makeme Thine forever,
And should I faunting be,
Lord let me never, never
Outlive my love for Thee.

- Anon

The foundations of national glory are set in the homes of the people. They will only remain unshaken while the family life of our nation is strong, pure and simple.

- King George IV.

"For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made known, so that men are without excuse." Romans 1:20.

And nature, the old nurse, took
The child upon her knee,
Saying, 'Here is a story book
Thy Father hath written for thee.'
'Come, wander with me,' she said
'Into regions yet untrod,
And read what is still unread
In the manuscripts of God.'

- Henry W Longfellow

10/1996

'There is no God', the foolish said;
    But none, 'There is no sorrow'.
And nature oft the cry of faith
    In bitter need will borrow.
Eyes which the preacher could not school
    By wayside graves are raised;
And lips say, 'God be pitiful;'
    Who never said, 'God be praised.'

- Elizabeth Browning

What a joy it is to share with those who have just come to a faith in Jesus Christ. A new Christian once wrote:

"I think I have discovered one thing: one can't have Christ and be miserable at the same time. If anyone is miserable he hasn't got the real thing, which reminds me of what Lord Wolseley said, ‘A man without hope makes an indifferent soldier; one without cheerfulness is worse than useless'. And as General Booth used to say, ‘There is no occasion to put off ‘the old man' and put on the old woman.'

"It seems extraordinary to me what pleasure there is in prayer and reading the Bible. I was wondering why it had no appeal to me before, it was not long before I had the answer - ‘The natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness unto him, neither can he know them because they are spiritually discerned'. People believe in wireless waves, but do not trouble to investigate a Power that will help them in every incident of their lives, a Power that is always at hand."

From "This One Thing I Know" by A J Russell,
Hodder & Stoughton, London p191.

God does not forget the sinner, just his sin.

- Richard DeHaan

"He who tends a fruit tree will eat its produce, and he who looks after his employer will be rewarded"

Oh, fix our earnest gaze
    so wholly, Lord, on you,
That with your beauty occupied,
    all else is dimmer view.

- Selected

‘Another year - another century - another millennium'; but life goes on one day at a time.
Treasure every moment that you have.
Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is mystery.
Today is a gift; that's why it is called ‘the present'.
Jesus said, "My name is I am."
When you live in the past with its failures and regrets, He is not there. His name is not, ‘I was'.
When you live in the future with its uncertainties and fears, it is hard. His name is not, ‘I will be'.
When you live today for what it is, it is not impossible. Jesus said, "Be not afraid, I am."

Some day that golden dawn will come
When I have reached my journey's end
And all my work on earth is done
My guide has now become my friend

The Parable of the Fishes

The fishes of the sea live in salt water, yet when we eat boiled fish there is no salt taste in the water in which they have been boiled. They have lived in an environment impregnated with salt, yet they have kept free from its flavour. So do true Christians live in the world, without taking it into their hearts.

- Sadu Sundar Singh

Faith is like muscle which grows stronger with use,

Little faith may bring your soul to heaven,
