The verses in this month's daily readings express aspects of a Christian believer. The Bible likens the God's children to many other things. Each object is like the believer in one or more significant ways. Identify and examine the likeness. What do you learn from this? Add to your note book begun last December.
The list below is one interpretation of these verses and like, last month, is given only by way of illustration. It is not the correct answer as there is no 'correct answer.' This method invites you to explore the Bible for yourself. When you condense the text to a few words you force yourself to think through what is being said. What you have at the end is your own summation of each passage, and that is the blessing. Your work should be revised periodically as your knowledge of God and His word increases and you get a better idea of what is being said.
Only view it if you need or when you have done the best you can and your own work is complete.
Day 1. | Galatians 3:26 | Children of God. Ephesians 5:1 "Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children." Dear children, Paul calls us. Dear to him and dear to his Lord. We are dear to God because He has begotten us and because He has redeemed us and because He has given His nature to us. Therefore we ought to seek to please Him. |
Day 2. | Romans 8:17 |
Heirs of God are born to their inheritance, enjoy the influence of their inheritance even before inheriting, hold a responsibility for their inheritance including any encumbrance, tradition, covenant or stipulation. They have a legal title under covenant, but not the property of their possession until the covenant comes into force, usually the death of the testator.
|
Day 3. | Psalm 103:1-5 | An Eagle. As the lion is the king of the beasts, so the eagle is the top of the chain in the skies. We can see the similarity. Go's children, heirs to the eternal kingdom in Christ are like no other in His creation. Even the angels are ministers to him. But the similarities do not end there. Discover more characteristics of the eagle and their similarity to the child of God. See Isaiah 40:31 also to help expand your ideas. |
Day 4. | John 10:22-31 | Sheep. This is in the plural, a flock. Some characteristics of a sheep also apply to the flock, such as its vulnerability as a prey. However concentrate on aspects of the flock. For example, a flock of sheep can be very profitable to the owner, supplying wool for an income and meat for his table. Sheep are sociable. Sheep have need of constant care. The list has great potential. |
Day 5. | 2 Timothy 2:3 | A Soldier in the Bible is either a member of the military or sometimes a metaphor for those engaged in the battle for the souls of men and women and who must fight against the forces of evil that oppose them. There are many characteristics of a soldier's life that apply to the Christian. He leaves the affairs of ordinary life and commits himself to a leader. |
Day 6. | Hebrews 12:1&2 | A Runner. See also 1 Corinthians 9:24. Do not think about the race, rather the runner and all that goes into the running of the race: goal setting, attitudes, discipline in all its facets, preparation, attitudes, values and the like. |
Day 7. | Matthew 5:13 | Salt. To lose ones savour is a translation of a word meaning to be caused to become insipid. It is passive, that is being acted upon by some one or thing to cause one to act as an idiot, to be made foolish or lose ones savour (relish, tang, bite etc). It is a by product, or reaction of something else going on in our lives that is spoiling our testimony) |
Day 8. | Matthew 13:45&46 | A Merchant. A merchant is a specialist in his field. He knows more about his trade than any customer. He understands values. He is careful, shrewd, industrious and courteous in his trading. However in this instance his awareness of value caused him to take a great risk and plunge all into one transaction. |
Day 9. | 1 Peter 2:11 | Aliens, Strangers. a pilgrim AV. The word means one who dwells alongside, an alien resident. We belong to a distant kingdom, but we are here for a time till our God calls us home. We are to dwell peaceably but resist being overcome by the culture of this world. |
Day 10. | Psalm 92:12a | A Palm Tree. The palm referred to here is the date palm. It is tall and straight. It is evergreen Psalm 1:3. Young trees are weak and are planted in groups which then cling together to ensure mutual survival, but when mature can bear heavy loads. Its fruit is nutritious. |
Day 11. | Matthew 13:33 | Wheat. The most valuable of grains and very profitable to grow. It is prolific. John 12:24, but must die to its self and God causes the multiplication. When the husk is full it hangs its head, but when empty it stands tall. It is subject to infestation by weeds, which in Palestine were look-alikes, but counterproductive. |
Day 12. | Matthew 5:14 | Light. is not the opposite of darkness, darkness is the absence of light. Light exposes reality. Light is a byproduct of the existence of its source entity, thus it cannot exist of its self. Light is accompanied by heat. Light is composed of a spectrum of wave lengths which is capable of an infinite number of combinations and effects. Light is useless unless the beholder is capable of its reception. It can heal or it can kill, depending on the capacity of the object which stands in its path. |
Day 13. | Psalm 92:12b | A Cedar was a tree of Lebanon (in OT times not a country, but a mountain in the north of Palestine Judges 3:3.) The timber was valued for building because its timbers are not subject to rot like other timbers. It was therefore the choice of timber for the building of the first temple. It is tall but deep rooted and thus weathers storms. It is fruit bearing. |
Day 14. | Zechariah 1:7-13 | A Myrtle Tree. The primary application of this passage is the return of the Jews from Babylon, but some see a secondary application of when the Lord returns with His saints at the coming and final restoration of Israel to the purposes of God. The myrtle was valued by Jews of the day as it yielded two sorts of fruit for oil and wine. It has a fragrant perfume. There are many varieties and colours. They stood in the in the shelter ravine. The angel of the Lord was in the midst. |
Day 15. | Isaiah 44:4 | A Willow. The reference is to the Jews who turn to the Lord in the last day See Zechariah 12:10 & etc.. Willows are water thirsty and are not found in dry places, but flourish in drought. A Christian cannot survive when deprived of the water of life. |
Day 16. | 2 Corinthians 4:7 | An earthen vessel. It is made by a skilled worker. It is made of common stuff. They are easily broken. Vessels have differing values and different purposes. They need to be kept clean. Their purpose is to hold something, which can have small of great value. They are purposeless if they are not in use. They can be easily put aside and another used. |
Day 17. | Proverbs 28:1 | A Bold Lion will turn and face a fierce enemy with strength, determination and other creatures show disquiet or fear in its presence. |
Day 18. | Job 23:10 | Gold. "When He has tried me I shall come forth as gold." God is very precious. All men seek it. It is won at great cost and effort. When won, it must be refined. It cannot be refined to 100% purity by fire. When put into the furnace it will lose nothing of its mass. Fire can melt it, but not consume it. When skilfully formed into an article, its value is greatly increased. It forms the crown of a monarch. |
Day 19. | Matthew 10:16b | Serpents. Represented in Scripture as evil as venom, but here although possessing a small brain it credited to be crafty and was so held by ancient writers and also Genesis 3. The word 'wise' or 'shrewd' has the thought of taking heed or paying attention. In this context Jesus says, 'Beware of men' v17. A modern equivalent might be, 'Know your enemy.' and the reason for it is in v17. Paul used craft in his evangelistic efforts. 2 Corinthians 12:16. |
Day 20. | Matthew 10:16b | Doves. A meal for a serpent. 'Harmless' or 'innocent' means to be simple, the opposite of shrewdness, speaks of our dealing with men rather than their dealing with us. They are: gentle, nest in the rocks, like to flock together, faithful to their mate, feed on grain not carrion, live near streams or pools, often molested but do not attack, their only defence is flight and are known as the symbol of peace. |
Day 21. | Hosea 4:16 | A lamb in a drought. The context is adversity under the hand of God's discipline for rebellion and iniquity, and Israel was a lamb in an open field and not in the fold with the shepherd. So God cares for His own. A lamb can forage where a steer would starve. The wilderness indicates loneliness, paucity, dryness, hardness, and in the being left to its own resources. All this, but not abandoned. |
Day 22. | 1 Peter 4:10 | A steward. More than a servant set to a task, stewards have authority over the possessions of their master and are answerable for its use when called to account. They must make good, must use their initiative, are limited by the policies set by the master but enjoy considerable freedom in the exercise of their stewardship. |
Day 23. | 1 Peter 2:5 | Stones used for building. Some are cut to shape and size, some are used untreated. All are selected for their particular purpose, must suit the overall plan, must conform to the quality and characteristics in keeping with the purpose, are valuable once selected, have a specific function, have a unique place of significance and use, are part of a whole, are owned by somebody. Some are visible, some are hidden. Each rests upon another and in turn supports others. |
Day 24. | Malachi 3:17 | Jewels. Jewels are rare, and are a thing of beauty. They are respected and desired of all. They are found rough and must be polished to beauty. They are valuable and costly. They are kept in a safe place until taken for selection to be made. They are an adornment and worn by people of means. "You will also be a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord, And a royal diadem in the hand of your God." Isaiah 62:3. |
Day 25. | Revelation 1:6 | Kings AV. Later versions read 'a kingdom.' James Strong writes of this word, Probably from a word meaning the notion of a foundation of power; a sovereign abstractly, relatively or figuratively, that is a king. The word is in the plural. Thus not the High King. Kings are of royal blood, are attended by others, are crowned, hold authority, do not usually deal in trifles, make decisions of judgement and enjoy the privilege of prerogative. |
Day 26. | 1 Peter 2:9 | Priests. They have the duty to bring others to God, have an approach to and intimacy with God and bring sacrifices on behalf of others. Believers are called a 'royal priesthood,' as priests under grace, not law and offer spiritual sacrifices on behalf of others to bring them to God. But first, "Give me your heart, my son, And let your eyes delight in my ways" Proverbs 23:26. |
Day 27. | Matthew 13:52 | A Householder AV or a head of a household. His duty is to provide for those under his care, especially his children. Resources consist of things long owned and newly acquired. The children have a duty to care for the head. These things apply in the Christian household physically and the household of faith spiritually. |
Day 28. | Matthew 7:24-27 | Servants. They have a duty of care to their master who is delayed. Therefore they are: awake, watchful, attentive, expectant. They are also relaxed, confident and prepared. All this is to please the one who is their master. |
Day 29. | John 15:5 | Branches. In some ways the vine is all branches. The branch receives the sap of the vine, depends upon the vine, is of the same genetic composition as the vine, bears the fruit, is subject to shaping, is possible of disease and mal-function, receives the tending of the farmer. Apart from me you can do nothing may be reversed - without all of you, I can do nothing. The relationship is cooperative. |
Day 30. | Mark 4:19 | A Fisherman is a trained and skilled tradesman not a sportsman. he understands the sea, the fish, where they are found, how to catch them, their characteristics and commercial value. He can market his catch including its preservation and transportation. He owns the correct equipment and knows how to use it, is physically capable and spends long hours preserving and using it. |
Day 31. | John 15:14&15 | Friends. Friends enjoys a relationship with a degree of intimacy, have common interests, share in joint activities, and reputation. They have the same friends and enemies, hold a respect for and a responsibility towards each other. They enjoy each other's company, involve themselves in each other's affairs and protect each other's reputation and possessions. |
