Glen Park Gospel Church >> Bible Studies >> Favourite Readings #8
The eigth year of favourite Bible readings. The Read Through the Bible in Three Years plan is still running on this web site and can be followed on the above 3 Year Bible link. This year however, we continue with a year of the most favourite Bible passages grouped together under one or more themes each month. You will notice that the reading may be short, sometimes only a few verses, seldom more than twenty. Also you will probably read some passages more than once, but in a different context.
If you are settled into a regular pattern with your devotional time, please continue to enjoy it, but if you are not in the habit of regular Bible reading; here is your opportunity. Make a habit of selecting something from each reading to encourage and fuel your prayer time. A point of praise; encouragement to pray; a lesson to learn or an example to follow. Use the Bible passage to keep your prayer time active and interesting. Look for God to speak to you through His word and wait on Him. He is not in a hurry. Then share this blessing with someone else.
Each month we will update the tables below to include the current month's readings, until eventually another full year is portrayed. It will then always be available from our Archive of Study sections.
Readings this month continue a survey of the life of Jesus which began with our Christmas devotions and will take us to the death and resurrection of Jesus for our Easter week. We are generally following the order of John Stott in his devotional readings Through the Bible Through the Year (available at a little over $20 retail from Christian book stores.) The schedule will be arranged to ensure that the topics fit the seasons dates. The ‘p’ number is the page in his book for that reading.

Daily readings continue following the ministry highlights of Jesus as we travel with Him from the cradle to the cross and beyond. The associated 'p' numbers correspond to the daily devotional page of John Stott's 'Through the Bible Through the Year', available from your Christian bookshop.

Our readings are taking us from the birth to the death and resurrection of Jesus. Christmas to Easter and beyond. Many of these selections are quite short. That is intentional. They are intended to present one main thought for each day. Try to keep it in mind throughout the day. Give it a title that explains it and write it down. Review your collection at the end of the month and see how the theme has progressed.

April Bible readings look at the implications of the work of the cross and resurrection of Jesus in the life of the believer. In early May we will take up the coming of the Holy Spirit and then work our way from the Acts of the Apostles in making Jesus Christ known, through their letters, to the end of times as revealed in Jesus to John.

This year the Ascension of the Lord is celebrated on the 15th of May. Our readings anticipate it by more than a week in the interest of keeping events in the correct order. Some readings are quite small. This is because they detail a developing theme. To see this trend develop, give each one a descriptive title, note it down, and review it at the end of the series in June.

Some years ago we took a tour called Glimpses of Europe. A day here, two days there, a different bed most nights. This month's readings let us journey with Paul to glimpse some of his major destinations and then we begin a Glimpses of the Gospel journey through Paul's major Gospel themes. Enjoy your devotion! (Two added readings allow us to maintain John Stotts original weekly grouping.)

This month we take a look at more letters of Paul. Some of your favourite passages are missed out as we concentrate rather on Paul’s career, his teaching, his readers and their needs. Our aim is to better understand these times of the book. Enjoy your exploration!

Days of heaven on earth. Ending with a terrible battle with the evil one and his minions, The Lord will return to redeem His own. He will establish a thousand year universal reign of peace in equity. His enemies will be made to submit. Hear then His call. “Behold I am coming quickly.” This month we end the year long journey we have made through the Bible under John Stott.

Dr. Graham Scroggie says miracles are parables in deeds and parables were miracles in words. Three miracles concern raising the dead, four illustrate Jesus' creative power, Nine relate to nature, four show providential blessing, one of judgement and twenty three to compassion by healing.

Resources for Christian Living:
Each reading points you to one or more resources that God has provided to enable you to survive and thrive as a Christian. Reduce each reading to one resource word meaningful to you and carry that idea with you through the day. Example: Day 1 could be, “Courage”

The angel's words "bring you good news" (Christmas day reading) is an English translation of just one word. It is found in our Bibles in different expressions which also include, 'have the gospel preached to them', 'bring good news,' and the like. As this short list indicates the meaning is not the good news, but the delivery of the good news to them that are needy. As you read through, try to discover from the context, secrets that will help us to be more effective in this task God has committed into our care.
