Glen Park Gospel Church >> Bible Studies >> Favourite Readings #2

Another year of favourite Bible readings. The Read Through the Bible in Three Years plan is still running on this web site and can be followed on the above 3 Year Bible link. In 2010 however, we follow last year's course, a year of the most favourite Bible passages grouped together under one or more themes each month. You will notice that the reading is shorter, sometimes only a few verses, seldom more than twenty. Also you will probably read some passages more than once, but in a different series.

If you are settled into a regular pattern with your devotional time, please continue to enjoy it, but if you are not in the habit of regular Bible reading; here is your opportunity. Make a habit of selecting something from each reading to encourage and fuel your prayer time. A point of praise; encouragement to pray; a lesson to learn or an example to follow. Use the Bible passage to keep your prayer time active and interesting. Look for God to speak to you through His word and wait on Him. He is not in a hurry. Then share this blessing with someone else.

Each month we will update the tables below to include the current month's readings, until eventually another full year is portrayed. It will then always be available from our Archive of Study sections.

Psalms, one for each day of the month of January

God promises to guide His people. He will if we ask and trust Him. He will guide us in our ways. This month's readings explore some of these ways and their outcome in our lives. His part is to guide; ours is to listen to Him through His word, lay our need before Him and look for His answer. There are also some warnings to heed.

The four Gospels tell the Jesus story from different perspectives. Of a total 3920 verses in the Gospels, 1865 or 48% are Jesus' own words, and in 10% of these He quotes or alludes to the Old testament. This month we examine some of these in His daily ministry. These are mainly teaching, rather than prophetic.

TOP || Previous || Next March

This month, approaching Easter, we are considering the miraculous fulfilment of Old Testament prophecy in the suffering, death and resurrection of the Saviour. This phenomenon alone puts beyond all doubt the Divinity of Jesus and the validity of His atoning sacrifice. We culminate all this with the Easter celebration early in April.

“Listen, and I will teach you what wise men have said. Study their teachings and you will be glad if you remember them and can quote them. I want you to put your trust in the Lord: that is why I am going to tell them to you now. I have written down thirty sayings for you. They contain knowledge and good advice, and they will teach you what the truth really is. Then when you are sent to find it out you will bring back the right answer.”
Proverbs 22:17-21 (GNB)

The Bible is literally full of workable instructions for everyday practical problems. This month’s daily readings provides Thirty Practical Provisions for life’s Perplexing Problems. Take time to meditate over each one, and perhaps, as the writer suggests, memorise them.

A Christian's Wealth Manager. This month's daily readings are a portfolio of texts dealing with true and temporal wealth. The purpose is to encourage us to put this question into biblical perspective. We have taken a wide range of Bible references to put the topic into balance. Each is true in its contextual setting.

"The Eternal God is your refuge and dwelling place, and underneath are the everlasting arms." The concept of God as a refuge is found throughout the Bible, either as an idea or a metaphor. The word in the Old Testament has the combined idea of a place to flee from danger and then to dwell in safety. You will probably find either 'flee' or 'refuge' depending on the Bible version you are reading, but in your meditation remember its fullest sense and put yourself by faith under God's all loving care as day follows day.

Every Christian is called to 'live by faith.' It is not the preserve of the pastor or missionary. Faith can facilitate wonderful things if it is vested correctly in the Son of God. Faith is what we have when we believe. These daily reading give, explanation, encouragement and stories of faith.

Matthew in his Gospel sorts his material into groups of two, three, five and seven. It was an Hebrew writing style to aid memory and emphasise points. August readings take up some of the three groups. As you read try to remember the point of that group.

Luke and Paul. These readings are small, mostly just two verses. Look for words and ideas in common. Use each one to fuel your meditation and worship. Then look for other instances of the same idea. Keep a note pad as you go. You can build up quite a collection to share with some one else. The relationships are explained in the accompanying editorial here.

He is Able. Our God ‘is able.’ The word ‘able’ tells of power; the strength when called on to achieve, to get things done (Strongs word, G1410). This months readings examine this word as the Bible uses it to tell about God’s ability. The word has been translated in different ways, so you may not always easily identify it, but the idea is there. Meditate on the concept. Use it to help your trust to grow.

The answer key to the Metaphors depicting the person and work of Jesus Christ. These comprise the Green Leaf set readings for December and January. There are about fifty metaphors, and each daily reading calls up just one of these images. Sometimes we are not sure if our selection is the one intended. Make a list as you go and use it to expand your appreciation of your Saviour. It runs for two months, but there is a break for the Christmas celebration readings.

 1.
Hebrews 7:22
A Surety or Guarantee, one who puts himself or his assets up to ensure the performance of another.
 2.
1 Timothy 2:5,
Hebrews 12:24
A Mediator, one who stands between to make peace.
 3.
John 3:29
A Bridegroom, one standing in a unique promissory or actual, permanent relationship to the bride.
 4.
Hebrews 1:3
An exact image pictures a seal which produces exact copies as a gurrantee of security and integrity. The proto-type.
 5.
Matthew 9:1
A Physician, Jesus is in fact a healer but in this reading a metaphor is being used.
 6.
Hebrews 9:16
A covenant, read in this application, a testament or will. The testator is the one making the testament or will. v15 speaks of the first covenant, made with Abraham and confirmed with Moses, but superceded by that of God in Christ. We upon His death enter our inheritance.
 7.
John 10:9
A door. The image is a sheep fold door. There was an opening in the wall only. The sheep enclosed and the shepherd slept in the opening. A wolf entering to attack the sheep must first cross and wake the shepherd.
 8.
Isaiah 42:1-8
In this reading Jesus prophetically is the servant of the Lord, doing all His will perfectly. Contrast Him with out political and religious masters.
 9.
John 13:3-17
A servant not of but to the lowly. An extension of the thought above in the nature of servanthood to God is to function as a servant to fellow servants. Genuine service is a function of genuine leadership.
 10.
John 6:25-58
Jesus the bread of life. The key to this metaphor is in v35. Jesus says to come is to eat and to believe is to drink, so that those who come and believe will never hunger or thirst.
 11.
1 Timothy 6:15&16
The King of kings is the High King. In any country where there are multiple princedoms. each served by its king, he who ruled over the others was the High King. Jesus is far above the gods of this world. King of all kings and Lord of all lords.
 12.
Hebrews 7
Jesus is the Priest, that is He is unique in His office. There is but one.
 13.
Matthew 13:54-58,
Acts 3:22
The Word become flesh in threefold aspect of interrelation akin in type to the ministry of prophets, priests and kings.
 14.
John 10:11
The good Shepherd who cares for the sheep.
 15.
Zechariah 3:8&6:12
A branch is an out growth of the main trunk, of the nature of the plant from which it has sprung, above or below the graft. So Christ is very God of very God.
 16.
John 14:6
The way is at once the means and medium for the accomplishment of its end and this is all embracing.
 17.
1 Corinthians 10:4
The rocks were material impersonal things, but the reality in our experience of Christ the Rock in the stuff of life is that God in Christ is in all because He is in and with His people.
 18.
Zechariah 13:1
That fountain was "opened' the day that Christ died, but the 'that day' of Zechariah is the day when Israel will look upon Him whom they have pierced in the mourning and repentance of belief.
 19.
1 Corinthians 11:3,
Colossians 1:18
The head is the controlling member of a body. for other applications of the metaphor such as a cap stone the principle is similar.
 20.
Romans 13:14
Put on as a garment, is reminiscent of Ephesians 4: 24 where the words used a different in that is called for the new self, the behaviour of the one renewed in Christ. Put aside the old, put on the new.

The remainder of the December Readings are of the Christmas season. Metaphor readings will recommence in January.
