Glen Park Gospel Church >> Bible Studies >> Favourite Readings
A whole year of favourite Bible readings. For the last nine years, in the Green Leaf, we have been following a Read Through the Bible in Three Years plan. That plan is still running on this web site and can be followed on the above 3 Year Bible link. In 2009 however, we are charting a different course, a year of the most favourite Bible passages grouped together under one or more themes each month. You will notice that the reading is shorter, sometimes only a few verses, seldom more than twenty. Also you will probably read some passages more than once, but in a different series.
If you are settled into regular pattern with your devotional time, please continue to enjoy it, but if you are not in the habit of regular Bible reading; here is your opportunity. Make a habit of selecting something from each reading to encourage and fuel your prayer time. A point of praise; encouragement to pray; a lesson to learn or an example to follow. Use the Bible passage to keep your prayer time active and interesting. Look for God to speak to you through His word and wait on Him. He is not in a hurry. Then share this blessing with someone else.
Each month we will update the tables below to include the current month's readings, until eventually the full year portrayed. It will then always be available from our Archive of Study sections.
Psalms, one for each day of the month of January
Psalms are so popular because they meet us where we are. They were written by people who were also going through lifes problems and in them found that there was no easy answer. But there is a God who is there, One who understands, One who cares.

Februarys readings look at the prison letters of Paul to the early churches.
Some of the best works were written by people who were in prison because of their faith. An example of this is the Pilgrims Progress of John Bunyan. These people probably have busied themselves with the affairs and concerns of the people in their pastoral care, but their imprisonment gave them an opportunity which has had a far greater impact for the Lord over centuries. Paul had to write, and his writing has been preserved for almost two thousand years.
Februarys readings look at the prison letters of Paul to the early churches. Paul often wrote because there were problems needing to be corrected, but not always. Sometimes we need to be corrected too, and sometimes we simply need to be encouraged. Whatever our mood as we open the Bible this month let us ask, "What's in this for me? Is there a lesson to learn, an example to follow, an attitude to correct? Lord, speak to me in your word and show me more about my Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ.

May is the end of Autumn, the days drawing in and quickly becoming cooler.
We will take up some of the stories that Jesus told. People lived closer to the earth then. These are down to earth stories about everyday affairs. To enrich your reading try to find out about the customs and culture of that bygone day. It will open the text to teach its lessons in depth and add to your enjoyment; then share it with someone else. Go to a Christian book shop and ask for something to help.

October promises warming weather and longer days, even though the hope of all about Glen Park is for just a little extra rain. Where ever we look there is room for a little prayer.
It can be refreshing to model our prayers on those found in the Bible. It saves us from getting stuck in a prayer routine rut. In them you will find covenant, rejoicing, petition, praise, supplication, worship, and just plain conversation with God. What kind of prayer is todays? What is significant about it and how does it relate to the circumstance of my own life?

November already; where ever has the year gone. Have you got everything done that was intended by year's end? Is there time for anything but those last minute jobs? By now we hope that setting a little time aside each day for reading God's word has rewarded you with the right frame of mind and the resources to fulfil the day's measure.
Resources for Living as a Christian: Each reading includes one or more resources God has provided to enable you to thrive and survive as a Christian. Reduce each reading to one meaningful word and carry it with you during the day. Example: Day 1 could be 'Courage.'

It all seems such a long time ago. But for those who lived before the first Christmas, it was just as mysterious, or maybe more so.
The Old Testament amazingly predicted most significant factors of the life, office, and work of God's Messiah, Jesus Christ, including His birth. This Christmas we examine some of these Old Testament predictions and their fulfilment. Wonder at it all.
